Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to you to appeal for credit standing in SOCY275, a course I completed in Fall 2016. Due to extenuating circumstances I received a significantly lower grade in this course, and believe that my academic standings may be jeopardized by the grade I received in this course. I believe that the grade was not a true reflection of my academic abilities and believe that under different circumstances I would have performed differently.
Prior to beginning this 2016-2017 school year, I was involved in a car accident that caused me to obtain many physical injuries. Since the accident, I have had many pains in and outside of the class room. I found my pains to increase when sitting for long periods of time. Specifically, when writing tests or exams in classrooms, I found that my shoulder and back pain would increase, as well as I would get headaches that would distract and cause issues in me completing tests to my full ability. Between September-November I wrote many assignments, in which I would also endure pains and headaches throughout, but with assignments I found myself adapt to my injuries and learning how to manage my time best to be able to complete assignments on time. I found that working on assignments in 30 minute increments, and taking 10 minute breaks in between worked best for me. Unfortunately, I was not able to do this during tests and mid-term exams. During the semester, I completed 3 mid-terms and an in-class quiz. The quiz and 2 of the mid-terms took place in SOCY275. Due to my circumstances, I believe that I was not able to perform to my full ability on these evaluations.
In November, I met with the Queens Student Accessibility Services and was able to create accommodations specified to my circumstances. This was extremely helpful when completing my final exams in December. In my future endeavours, I hope to work together with the many resources that Queens has to offer that allows me to achieve academic success. I hope to continue rehabilitation for my injuries and be able to heal and begin working and learning at 100 again. Until then I plan to work to my full abilities and seek help when needed. I plan to continue at Queen's in the faculty of Arts, as Sociology major, completing courses that are of great interest to me and that can assist me in gaining the knowledge and education I need to succeed in my future academic and professional endeavours.
