Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard, Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop MATH 121 (Summer, 2016) due to extenuating circumstances that were ongoing over the period in which I was enrolled in this course.
Due to some confusion between myself and counselling services as to when the supporting documentation would be sent in, this letter is being submitted past the deadline. There was uncertainty over timing of the submissions and I apologize for the delay. I understand therefore, that my first step in this appeal of a Summer 2016 drop is to appeal the 21 day deadline. I hope you will accept this late appeal.
Over the past year I found myself, and my family, dealing with various unforeseen issues and major changes. My younger brother has been unable to attend school since Spring of 2016 due to health reasons, and our family continues to support him towards a return to full health. During this time, I slowly began to show signs of a declining ability to focus on my studies and extra curricular activities. Simple tasks such as waking up at a regular hour, or doing laundry became exceedingly difficult. Not only did my academics suffer, I also went from an extremely active lifestyle involving many sports and activities to doing virtually nothing with my time. I was unable to motivate myself to focus on my studies or do many other regular, every day tasks and activities resulting in a performance that I do not feel is indicative of my capabilities. This also led me to drop my fall 2016 courses part way through the semester, as well as taking a toll on my first year courses as well. For these reasons I am appealing to drop MATH 121 Summer 2016 and, if possible, my Fall 2015 Math 121 and Winter 2016 BIOL 103. My reasons for including the two other courses are that my personal counsellor believes that these symptoms were present during my first year at Queen's and thereby limiting my abilities to be the student I am capable of being. As well, I have been advised by Joyce Hunter to request that my Fall BIOL 102 be granted Credit (CR) standing for the reasons listed above. After several meetings with both academic and personal counsellors, we are still trying to figure out the nature of what exactly was affecting me at the time, and when it first started, but have managed to start rebuilding good habits.
Should this appeal be granted, my plan is to continue with my studies in 2017 after I have spent my time away from school getting back to where I want to be health wise. This Winter I have taken a reduced course load to ease my transition back into academics after a brief step out. I believe that with my progress towards recovery and rebuilding of old habits that this is a feasible goal that will allow me to continue towards receiving and education from Queen's University.
Thank you
Sincerely,
Mitchell Van Eerd
