Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
My name is Devon Makse, and I am a first year here at Queen's University. I had wanted to major in Economics when I first came here, which required me to take MATH 126. However, I decided last term that a path in English would be much better suited for me, and no longer require MATH 126. I have been struggling in the course since the beginning, and currently am below a passing grade. I have been planning to drop the course since the beginning of this term after receiving my exam grade, yet was unable to do so due to my family's financial situation. Because of a compounding amount of unforeseen circumstances, my family was unable to pay my residence fees, and later, my winter tuition fees until earlier this month. Myself and my family had been expecting to pay my tuition out of pocket, which is why I had not applied for student loans. I myself took on a minimum wage job her in Kingston at Subway, to help pay these bills. However, despite all of this, the payments were not processed until Saturday, March 4th, hours after the deadline to drop a course.
Because of my family's financials, I was unable to drop MATH 126, as the payments we made were too slow by about a few hours. I hope something can be done, as this situation has been incredibly frustrating and frightening for me. I fear for my future with MATH 126 on my academic record, and that myself and my family's work over the past few months may have been for nothing.
If further proof of my family's financials is required, please contact me.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
Devon Makse
