Petition Letter: Appeal to the Associate Dean (Studies)

a. Request: I am appealing to drop Econ 482 late

b. Explanation of Extenuating Circumstances:

As the Professor Garvie said, the draft paper I submitted can not meet the requirement to pass the course. The reason why I drop the course late because I got the feedback from the Professor after the due date of the last drop. The paper is significant to the course and worth 85 of mark combined with the presentation. Recently, during these days of rewriting the term paper, I am so stressful that I was not able to sleep and eat. I am incapable of writing the term paper with my weak analytical skill in the scarce time left since I am far behind the advanced economics theory writing level. At this critical moment, my grandfather is in the hospital due to illness in China. My parents were taking care of him in the hospital every day. His health condition distracts me from concentrating on my academic writing. I basically can not focus on my work when I think of my family having high expectations of me. They are so looking forward to seeing my convocation. I am so anxious that I can not graduate with the BAH degree, so I am better to change my mind and graduate with the general degree. Even though I am not able to accompany with and take care of my grandfather in my home country, I do not want him to feel disappointed about me with an F grade on my transcript, and I do not want him to know that I am so stressful during these days. My anxiety will only exert a negative effect on his health. I continuously kept myself isolated during the period of rewriting the paper. The isolation makes me so depressed and hopeless. I thought that I was not supposed to talk to my parent about my current circumstance because I want them to take good care of my grandfather as their priority.

c. Future:

I satisfied the requirement to graduate with the BA general degree, so I would like to graduate with this degree first. After graduation, I would focus more on improving my writing and analytical skills. I am planning to spend more time on the study of Economics as I am still interested in this subject. I will apply and come back to university after working for one year, and I hope I can complete this course and overcome my obstacle with a higher level of education in future.
