Dear Dr. Bénard,

I am appealing to have my grade from CHEM 281 (Fall 2016) removed from my transcript.

Early in September, my brother was admitted to the hospital with a life-threatening condition. As the semester progressed, he gradually improved and eventually was released from the hospital¿¿s care, and he has been healthy since. I was very worried throughout his recovery process. I was preoccupied with his condition, and found it hard to concentrate in my classes. I was calling home very frequently, seeking comfort from my parents. I was not able to focus on homework and could not effectively study for tests and midterms.

At the time, I did not realize the effect that this was having on my schoolwork, which is why I did not seek help from a healthcare professional. However, once my brother felt better and was released from the hospital, I was able to fully comprehend how much I had fallen behind throughout the semester. Unfortunately, by that point, most of my grades were unsalvageable. I did my best, and focused on the classes that I felt I could improve the most. I have encountered no difficulties this semester with my concentration and my grades have reflected this improvement.

Should my appeal be granted, I plan to transfer to a BSN program. I am asking for only CHEM 281 to be repealed because it is not a class that is required for acceptance into a BSN degree, and the failing grade will prevent me from being accepted into the program. Although I also did poorly in ANAT 315, it is a required course for acceptance into 2-year BSN programs, so I will retake it before applying to transfer.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Cassandra Wood
