Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am writing to submit an appeal to drop Psych 100 for the 2016/2017 year without academic penalty. I have been ill since November of 2016 to the present time. I continue to be followed by the medical team and counselling service at Queen's University. I am being treated with medications for my condition, however the treatment has resulted in many side effects such as exhaustion that has heavily impacted my academic performance, especially during fall exams in December. Due to my illness and side effects I have a hard time focusing and working efficiently.

I have been considering the option of dropping a course to minimize my course load due to my inefficiency in being able to complete my work and study. I wanted to wait until I had a chance to evaluate my performance on my midterms last week and the week before in order to make an informed decision. I had to defer my exam as I ended up with hives and an itchy rash throughout my body during that time period, including the day of the exam. I did not feel that I could sit for an exam since I was distracted with the itchy rash. The antihistamines of course would make me drowsy as well so they were not a solution. I was not sure whether the cause of the rash was related to a new medication added to my regimen to optimize treatment and help with my performance. I had to stop the medication over the weekend prior to midterms, which significantly impacted my ability to study. This medication was helping with the side effects of my treatment, specifically focus and attention. I am now back on the medication. The hives are likely due to stress and autoimmune response. Unfortunately, this week I experienced another health related stressor, which cannot be treated until April, when exams are taking place.

Under my current circumstances, I am requesting to part with one course to lessen my load and pressure. I am not performing efficiently, hence it is the most rational option at this point, and especially because of my persistent skin reaction and the treatment I will be receiving in April. I thank you for your ongoing support and compassion.

Sincerely
Dilina Lallani
