Associate Dean
Faculty of Arts and Science
Queens University
Dear Associate Dean
I am submitting an appeal to drop two courses I took in the fall of 2016 and an online summer course I took in 2016. The courses are:
1. PHGY170 Mammalian Cell Physiology
2. Math280 Advanced Calculus
3. Math 231 Differential Equations
Your records will show that I had to withdraw from the University last spring and submitted an appeal at that time as well. At that time I was diagnosed with depression. I went for medical tests and had some counselling. The depression continued into the summer of 2016 but my hope was to return to school. I tried the online course in the summer and thought it went well but I ended up failing the course. I returned to Queens for the fall term with a reduced class load (3 courses) as a trial to see if I could continue my studies. The term started well but by October I was feeling depressed again and my studies slipped. I withdrew from one course before the withdrawal deadline but continued with 2 courses. The depression got worse and by the end of the term I couldn¿¿t go out of my room even for meals.
After the term ended my parents picked me up and soon after had me admitted to hospital for my condition. I was diagnosed there with depression and mild psychosis. I have attached a letter from the doctor at St. Joseph¿¿s Hospital, Hamilton with his diagnosis. I started treatment at the hospital and was discharged under my parents¿¿ care and with daily medication. I have now started an outpatient program for rehabilitation at St. Joseph¿¿s Hospital.
I would like to continue University studies at some point. The staff at St. Joseph¿¿s hospital have told me that they have patients who have continued their studies after treatment and some of these people are now doing advanced degrees. I plan to work very hard to get back to the strong student I was before this illness started.
Sincerely
Leithen Wardlaw
