Dear Ms. Blake (Associate Dean ¿¿ Studies),
I am writing to appeal to waive the 21 day deadline on an academic appeal.
As a student returning to Queen¿¿s from academic probation, there are a number of grades on my transcript that reflect illness rather than academic capability. When I was a student attending Queen¿¿s on campus, I dealt with a number of mental health difficulties that significantly impacted my ability to be academically successful and that effectively eliminated my ability to make sound judgements. A large part of the impact on my decision-making abilities at the time was the belief that the failing grades I earned were a reflection of my lack of worth as a student and as a person, and not a reflection of the significant mental health challenges I was facing at the time. It is for this reason that I did not take proactive steps to appeal the grades I received within the 21 day deadline.
I have returned to studies as a distance learning student as of Summer 2016, when my 2013 requirement to withdraw for three years lapsed and my request to return was approved. I felt that not appealing that decision and taking three years of academic probation was necessary as I lacked the mental wellbeing required to be successful at Queen¿¿s. In the three years away from Queen¿¿s, I took a number of radical steps to work on my mental health and am now in a significantly better place with my illness. In attending Queen¿¿s during the Summer 2016 & Fall 2016 semesters, I have achieved GPAs of 4.3 and 3.7, respectively. I am very proud of the work I have done to improve my mental health and the hard work I have put in to my coursework over the last three semesters.
Should this appeal be granted, I will be submitting an appeal requesting late drops of failing grades from 2008 ¿¿ 2013, including ENGL 285 (2008), WMNS 230 (2008), ENGL 204 (2008), WMNS 215 (2009), ENGL 250 (2009), ENGL 265 (2009), GNDS 335 (2010), GNDS 370 (2010), GNDS 345 (2010), GNDS 212 (2010), GNDS 311 (2011), GNDS 215 (2011), GNDS 315 (2011), ENGL 205 (2011), GNDS 350 (2011), GNDS 212 (2011), GPHY 352 (2011), GNDS 427 (2012), GNDS 320 (2012), GNDS 321 (2012), ENGL 277 (2012), GNDS 345 (2012), GNDS 421 (2012), GNDS 340 (2013), GNDS 360 (2013), GNDS 215 (2013), and GNDS 440 (2013).
I believe that my inability to appeal within the 21 day deadline is not a reflection of apathy or of understanding that these grades were a true reflection of my academic capabilities, but a reflection of the serious mental health issues I was facing at the time and the impact these issues had on my ability to make sound judgements.
