Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:
Please accept the following as my request to appeal the late drop date for the course COMM 200.
In the month of February, I became extremely ill with influenza that progressed to pneumonia. Due to this illness, I was unable to complete course work or attend CAPSIM group meetings due to extreme fevers, chills and vomiting. My communication with group members at this time was brief, sending messages to explain that I was ill and unable to attend meetings. They're responses were few to none.
The last week of my group's simulation I was confronted by my group and told that they were concerned about my lack of participation in meetings and that I would need to do the majority of the final group project on my own and participate more in the one remaining CAPSIM round to correct this. I felt extremely belittled by this confrontation as the group members waited until the last minute to alert me of their concern, and did not give me very much time to add to the group in terms of participation.
My being personally targeted by the group due to my illness which was an extenuating circumstance, beyond my control triggered my diagnosed panic disorder. The panic of now having an increased workload, on top of trying to catch up on work from other courses, as well as knowing my group members were going to give me a bad participation mark caused me so much anxiety that I could not physically get my body to move to the final group meeting. My anxiety, that is usually very controlled took over my entire body as it sensed this meeting as a threat. I tried to fight this urge to attend the meeting but this attempt resulted in another panic attack.
I have booked an appointment to meet with my family physician to discuss this anxiety and work on coping techniques in case a situation like this ever arises again. I also plan on registering with Student Accessibility Services, so that in the future I will have access to accommodations surrounding my panic disorder.
The ability to drop this course after the late drop period would provide me with a substantial relief of stress. I know that my that my final mark in this course at my current standing will lower my grade point average and is not truly reflective of all the work I am capable of doing. I aspire to one day attend law school, and am working very hard to maintain the grades to achieve this aspiration. The extenuating circumstances of my influenza, pneumonia and anxiety this semester were beyond my control, I am now trying to regain control by removing this course from my transcript.
