Petition Letter: Dr. Johanne Benard
Associate Dean (Studies)
Student Services
1st floor Dunning Hall

Dear Ms. Benard,

I am appealing to drop GPHY 102 (Winter 2017) after the academic deadline with no academic penalty.

I am a first year student with a letter of accommodation due to an acquired brain injury. This abi affects my working memory, processing speed, and organization skills. I found the structure of GPHY 102 to be very challenging, weekly labs were expected and I found them difficult to understand, and, therefore complete. That led to me not handing them in on time and as I found myself missing more and more , due to my acquired brain injury and compromised executive function, I could not see a solution. When requesting an extension my professor notified me that extensions on assignments were not included in my letter, although last semester I was given an extension after showing this letter. My academic advisor was on leave since November for the remainder of the year (which I learned from a bounce-back email) and being a first year student, new to this process, I did not realize that I was responsible for getting a new advisor, I assumed one would have been assigned as they were in August.

In the future, when attending the first few sessions of courses, I will be more aware of my ability in the class and my possibilities for the future in the class so that if I come across difficulty like I experienced in this course, I can take steps to better my situation in the course, or , drop it on time and select a course that is more suitable to my academic strengths. Also, I will maintain regular contact with an academic advisor and I will be more proactive with my professors and T.A. ¿s regarding my letter of accommodation.

Thank you for your consideration. Attached, please find an Off Campus Physician¿¿s Note from my Family Physician.

Yours truly,

Ethan Scott 20009915
