Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whomever this may concern,

This past year, (since the beginning of the Summer) I have been dealing with depression, and triggers to which sparked my diagnosis of Border Line Personality Disorder. On many days, I have struggled to leave my room and to focus on remotely anything academic. The worst of it consisted in the month of November to February where I could not even make it to class as extreme anxiety would set in, not allowing me to even leave my room to eat. As a result, my grades effected greatly and especially, my grades in HIST 224.

Ever since childhood, I've dealt with the emotional traumas my family life instilled in me. My mom, who was an alcoholic and dealt with schizophrenia passed away of a self-inflicted drug overdose. As a result of such high, erratic emotions and traumatizing experiences I wish I could disassociate from, triggers are apparent in my life. However, I have been going to a therapist and am enrolling myself in a, Managing Your Emotions peer support skills class in September where they will teach me how to focus during triggering instances. This group is located on Bath Rd. and was introduced to me by the psychiatrists at LaSalle here at Queen's. I spoke to Kelly throughout my struggles first semester (one of the counsellors at LaSalle) as I noticed the triggers getting worse. I thought I would be okay as she went on maternity leave, but unfortunately, I still struggled with my mental illness after last seeing her in December.

I need this class to graduate with a minor in History, to which I have been working very hard on since coming to Queen's. I pride myself on my minor and it would be a shame to graduate without it as I have worked so hard to retain all the grade requirements. I am afraid if this appeal does not go through, all of my work will have been for nothing and my mental illness would have impeded me from obtaining my academic dreams.

Overall, I hope this letter finds you kindly and I also would like to thank you for giving students the opportunity to express themselves regarding their academics during such tried, confusing and emotional times.

Best,
Samantha Dalcourt
