Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean

I am appealing for Aegrotat Standing in KNPE 265 and KNPE 251 from the 2016 fall semester.

I was a pedestrian in a pedestrian-motor vehicle accident that occurred on October 2nd, 2016. I injured my upper back/neck, knee, and foot, which physically limited me from attending class for the first few weeks after the accident. I also obtained a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Concussion), which made it extremely difficult for me to complete any coursework and cognitively function at the same level I did before the accident. Additionally, the driver who hit me was criminally charged, so I had to deal with the legal consequences of his actions and all of the insurance requirements that come with getting hit, which was really overwhelming. These injuries and the additional paperwork led me to fail a few of my midterms, as well as defer all of my winter exams until I was medically cleared to perform them. Further, I was unable to complete all of the assignments that were required at the time of the accident, including a 10 assignment in KNPE 265, and a 12 assignment in KNPE 251. I have been in physiotherapy twice a week since the accident, massage therapy biweekly, and occupational therapy weekly. I have also seen two brain specialists and have had regular follow up from a family physician every two weeks.

In order to achieve academic success, I dropped from five courses to two (with two additional ensemble courses) in the winter semester so that I could focus on my recovery and finish all of my exams from the fall semester. I also sought out academic accommodations to help with my studies until my injuries have resolved. Going forward, I intend to continue to work with my rehabilitation team until I am able to function at the same level I used to before the accident, and I am also taking a summer course to make up for the drop in course load that I had in the winter semester.
