Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am appealing to have my final grade for ENGL 292 (2016-2017) subjected to Aegrotat at the discretion of my professor, Dr. Maggie Berg, after suffering a concussion before the final examination.
Following my first examination of the 2017 term on Wednesday, April 19th, I fell later that night and hit the back off my head off the pavement. After visiting the ER, I was deemed as having suffered a mild concussion. A note was written excusing me from my examination the next day, and I was in contact with my professors and my family doctor to assess my ability to write the rest of my finals. My doctor recommended at least a week of rest to recover and allow my concussion to heal, and that my exams be deferred for at least this long, making me unable to complete my examinations on the scheduled dates. Having suffered the concussion in the middle of the exam period, much of my studying had already been completed for these upcoming examinations. However, the added stress of needing to prepare for these examinations was detrimental to the progress of my healing. It is my hope to complete my examinations after allowing my body sufficient rest to perform to the best of my abilities.
Because ENGL 292 is a full year course, I feel that my knowledge of the course material has already been demonstrated. When discussing a potential date for me to write the exam at the beginning of the month, Dr. Berg suggested that I look into the potential of Aegrotat, since the quality of my condition is not guaranteed to improve in a set amount of time.
In deferring my finals and hopefully being granted Aegrotat I will be able to give myself enough time to fully recover from my concussion, preventing any further damage. The knowledge that I have already demonstrated of the course material in ENGL 292 makes me a good candidate for Aegrotat, which would relieve some stress, allowing me to better prepare for my other exams. I will need time to rest between my exams, and needing to complete three exams, with the final grade for my fourth course being calculated on my previous efforts, would allow me more flexibility in preparing for the other exams. If I do not allow myself sufficient recovery time before each of these finals, it could result in poor performance for the term. However, it could exacerbate my injury if I am not careful, hindering my future performance as well.
Thank you,
Rachel Gowland 10181486
