Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am writing to request the waiving of the appeal deadline for courses: PHGY 210, CHEM 211, CHEM 212, PHIL 259, PSYC 241, CHEM 281, GEOL 104, PHIL 293, ENSC 301, PSYC 271, taken during Summer 2012 Term - Winter 2014 Term.

There were extenuating circumstances that occurred during the summer of 2012 as well as during Fall 2012-Winter 2014, which greatly affected my functioning both socially and academically. I did not confide in anyone, as I was deeply ashamed, anxious and uncomfortable. This resulted in overwhelming emotions, and inability to concentrate which further caused withdrawal in attending lectures and handing in assignments. At the time, I should have reached out for help from student wellness services, and academic advisors to drop the courses however I was not in the right mindset to do so. After my required withdrawal from Queen's from Fall 2014- Winter 2015, I applied to return to my studies. In my second semester, I began to seek help from student wellness services, where I spoke to a personal counsellor regarding situations that had occurred during the Summer 2012- Winter 2014 term that affected my functioning both socially and academically.

Through my time seeking help from a personal counsellor and psychiatrist addressing the issues I had faced and how I dealt with them, I am working towards moving forward and learning lessons from the instances that happened for the circumstances to no longer negatively affect my social and academic life. Through this process, I am writing to waive the deadline to appeal the courses taken during Summer 2012- Winter 2014 Term, as I do not believe they are representative of my academic ability. I was unable to come forward earlier to appeal the courses, as I was still greatly affected by the extenuating circumstances. Now through the time spent addressing the extenuating circumstances with student wellness services, I have developed coping skills needed to help me complete my time at Queen's. In view of this, I would like to be given the opportunity to appeal the courses taken during Summer 2012- Winter 2014 as there were extenuating circumstances that prevented me from coming forward earlier.

Thank you kindly, for your consideration,
Jamuna Yoganathan
