Petition Letter
Petition Letter: My name is Jade Clements and I am applying for an appeal to enrol in PSYC 205 online this summer. Due to mental health issues, I had an extremely difficult time completing my courses. With the assistance of accommodations, I was able to complete them to the best of my ability. However, my anxiety and depression halted by ability to function on a daily basis and as a result I missed a large portion of class. Completing course work such as assignments became even more trying as I was missing class material. I had several meetings with accessibility services and a Queen¿¿s physician in order to seek the proper help. Dr. Elizabeth Nguyen prescribed me with medication after our discussion. She also provided me with continuous support. However, even with the assistance of Queen¿¿s resources, every day continued to be a battle. My mental health was not in a good state and my academic performance was affected by it.
Despite my best efforts, I recently found out on May 5 that I had failed my PSYC 221 course. Knowing that May 5th was the deadline, I knew I still had time to apply to another online PSYC course for the summer in order to graduate this coming fall. After some research, PSYC 205: Introduction to Comparative Cognition, was a course I had not previously taken that I was eligible to. However, on May 5th SOLUS would not let me enrol in the course. It stated that ¿¿I did not have access to enrol at this time.¿ Since the offices were closed, I sent out emails to Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment. On Monday May 8, I called academic advising and was informed of the appeal process. They also informed me that SOLUS had locked me out since I had applied to graduate earlier that year. I was told by an academic advisor that the system would be updated later and would then recognize that my credits had not all been finished. If the system had recognized this earlier, I would have been able to enrol on Monday May 8.
After another discussion with an academic adviser, I was informed that I should reach out to the current instructor of PSYC 205. I emailed the professor asking permission to enrol in the course. The professor, Valerie Kuhlmeier, stated, ¿¿If the course has not exceeded the enrolment limit, you have my permission to enrol. (If you do enrol, please let me know ¿¿ I will have to update you with information about Week 1 of the course).¿ With the support and encouragement of the professor, I would really like to apply for this course. I am aware that it is May 8th however I do believe that with only one course for the summer, I will be able to dedicate my time to this course. I have already moved back home permanently and as a result I am only able to take online courses.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I have reached out to professor Valerie Kuhlmeier, instructor of PSYC 205. She granted me permission to enroll in the course and offered to update me on the course material that I have missed so far. Now that summer has started, I have the time and space to focus on completing the course to the best of my ability. I would really like to take this course in order to graduate by this Fall 2017.
