Associate Dean (Studies)
Queens University
99 University Avenue

Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to have GEOL 200 dropped from my transcript. I took the course during the Fall 2016 semester and due to extenuating circumstances, I was not able to focus on my entire work load to the best of my abilities.

During Easter Break in March 2016 my parents informed my sister and I that they would be separating. Although I was not directly involved with their separation it did take its toll on me and as a result my grades suffered. I was emotionally and mentally preoccupied with my feelings I had towards the entire situation. I did see a therapist to discuss how I felt about my parents separation however I realize now that I did not devote enough time to myself. I was overwhelmed with my emotions. I was expecting (maybe hoping) that my feelings would go away. In the few sessions that I had with the therapist she did teach me how to try and reflect on my feelings at an appropriate time. This allowed me to hold in my grief until I was in a private location verses the middle of a lecture.

Due to the time frame of my parents separation all my 2016 Fall courses were a struggle. To cope, I made what I thought was the best decision at that time, and tried to focus my energies on the courses for my major and minor. I put my elective on the back burner. Honestly, I did not think I would fail. Unfortunately, the course only had two quizzes, a midterm and a final exam and trying to catch up was ineffective. I did attend class; however, my mind was elsewhere.

Adding to my emotional stress the GEOL 200 course conflicted heavily with midterms and finals in my other courses. In fact, at one point I had four midterms scheduled for one day, two of which were at the same time. I had to plead with my GEOL 200 professors to move the GEOL 200 midterm so I could write it. They were challenged to do so and it took a month for the situation to be resolved.

I have realized that I need to speak with a therapist on a regular basis and have put this in motion. I need help working through my emotions concerning my parents separation and to develop effective coping skills.

When I return to school in the Fall I plan on continuing with a full course load in Biology and Chemistry to achieve my Bachelors Degree. If you approve this appeal to have GEOL 200 struck from my transcript then I am able to take a regular work load during the school year. That coupled with a few courses in the summer I should be back on track.

Thank you very much for your consideration of this matter.

Kind regards,
Ariel Gilmore
