Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
My reason for writing this letter is to request an appeal, so that I may be able to drop Math 121 summer course (2014) pass it's deadline of June 27th 2014.


The basis for my appeal were extenuating medical circumstances beyond my control. Although I am usually respectful of the deadlines set by the school in these circumstances I was unable to meet them. When I first registered in Math 121 I had not yet been diagnosed and did not realize the scope of my illness and believed it would be resolved quickly. However it did not, which put me under a lot of added stress. My condition turned out to be chronic and I faced many flare-ups during the summer. Since summer school is accelerated with frequent tests and quizzes, even being sick for a week made me feel that I had fallen behind. By the time I recovered from one of the flare-ups, I felt that I would not be able to work to my full potential due to my condition interfering with my studies. Furthermore I was undergoing one of my medical flare-ups when the drop deadline occurred as stated in the medical note I have attached to this letter. This prevented me from dropping this course at the prescribed time. One of the flare ups even took place during the final examination period and leading up to it. Throughout the summer I have consulted with a health-care physician and am currently receiving treatment, however they do have to wait for a three month time period to conclude whether the treatment has worked effectively. Taking that into consideration I will still continue to see my physician until the issue is completely resolved.
Since this issue was undiagnosed by a physician my previous year before this summer I was unaware of how to deal with this issue or how to manage my symptoms, but now with the ongoing treatment and diagnosis I am on the path to completely resolve it for certain. For the future once school starts I will transfer to a medical physician located in Kingston and continue to receive treatment until the issue has been resolved.
