Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dean Bénard,

RE: Academic Appeal to drop POLS 110 (Winter, 2017) from my transcript.

On Friday, March 3rd 2017, I visited the dentist with a toothache that had developed into a serious infection. I was prescribed a course of antibiotics along with Tylonol1 for pain relief. Unfortunately, the codeine left me debilitated for much of the following week. Once able to do so, I contacted my professor to request an extension on our paper worth 30 of my final grade. Despite having provided him with a letter from my dentist corroborating my surgery and appointment schedule, Professor Lister denied my request stating that I failed to provide significant documented extenuating circumstances.

Unable to meet the paper deadline and catch up on the lessons of several missed classes, I failed the course. Although I had hoped to drop it, the official drop date (March 3rd 2017) had already passed. Subsequently, I am forced to file an academic appeal to have the course dropped from my transcript.

POLS 110 was an elective course for me and dropping it will have no significant impact on my academic future, However, should my failing grade for the course remain on my transcript this could have significant implications with regard to my acceptance into my Major (Global Development Studies). I do understand dropping a 6 credit course from my transcript will delay my degree completion and I have taken measures to make up 3 of those lost credits by enrolling in Law 201 as a summer course.

I am appealing to have POLS 110 removed from my transcript due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control. I sincerely hope you will grant my request.

Thank you in advance for your consideration,

Ehimen McEwen-Imoisili
