Petition Letter: To the Board of Studies,
I am writing to appeal the Associate Dean (Studies) decision to deny my appeal to waive the 21-day appeal deadline.
As the Dean has denied my request because:
¿¿Your appeal letter does not present any circumstances that are extenuating in nature to explain why you were unable to appeal by the June 16 deadline. While there was a grade outstanding in one your ENGL courses, it is clear from your transcript that you should have had no doubt concerning the severity of your academic situation well before receiving your essay grade back from Dr. Fanning. You should have consequently taken action much sooner. Furthermore, your file indicates that you submitted an appeal last year indicating that you are familiar with the process and deadlines.¿
I am requesting that the Board reconsider the decision and hope that as I have provided an overview of my trip, and my emails with Professor Fanning it will better understand why I was unable to submit an appeal within the 21 day deadline.
While I was away, I had little access to the internet (only in some hotels was there internet) and did not have a computer for the duration of my trip. I was not able to check emails frequently or access my transcript. I was also under the impression that had my ENGL 290 make been changed, my GPA would have been acceptable for me to return. During the 21 day period, I could not write a proper appeal as I was out of the country and would not have been able to contact an academic advisor, prepare my documentation or properly be in contact with someone who could have assured me that it was acceptable for me to submit my appeal late. As I returned on the 15th of June, I don't think I had enough time to submit an appeal in one day. As you can see from my documentation between myself and Professor Fanning, I was trying to rectify the situation as best I could while overseas and was clearly concerned about my grades. I have written my final appeal and spoken to an academic advisor to design my future plan and really would appreciate the opportunity to return.
To help with your decision, here is a timeline of the situation. I hope this will show you that I was incapable of submitting an appeal on time. I have also attached my itinerary from my trip.
April 29th - I left for my trip
May 8th - Professor Fanning and I decided June 15th was an acceptable date
May 27th - received requirement to withdraw letter
June 15th - submitted essay
June 16th - 21 day deadline
June 30th - received notice that ENGL 290 mark would be a 0
Between this date and now I have been compiling information for my appeals.
