Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am writing this letter to appeal my grade in CHEM 281 from the 2016 Summer term and have it changed to ¿¿CR¿. Due to a series of unfortunate and extenuating circumstances, I do not believe this grade reflects my academic capabilities.

As you know, I have been working very hard to overcome my concussion-related symptoms and achieve grades that are reflective of my academic level. It is quite evident that the grade I achieved in CHEM 281 is not an accurate representation of my capabilities. Although this was a course from the 2016 summer term, I wrote it during the Winter 2017 exam period. In reviewing my transcript, it will be quite evident that I am now better. I achieved an approximate 3.7 GPA in the winter 2017 semester, this no small feat considering the medical situation I faced. Clearly, there is a significant discrepancy between a 3.7 GPA and the ¿¿D¿ I achieved in CHEM 281. I honestly believe that I was extremely impaired while trying to learn the material over the 2016 summer term, this evident not only from my medical documentation but also acknowledge by Arts and Sciences as other courses have been successfully appealed. Despite my best efforts I could not perform in a way that reflected by abilities, this exceptionally hard so long after the exam. Dr. Carran also acknowledged that every day that went by translated into an impediment towards my performance in this course.

In moving forward, I am doing much better now. I have interviewed for graduate studies in multiple programs, and I am currently enrolled and attending the Graduate Diploma in Business at Smith School of Business. I do not foresee any academic issues in the future, and I am asking that you, please allow the change of this grade so my GPA is not affected and I can pursue further academics in the future.

Sincerely,

Matthew Demmings
