Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

Thank you for taking the time to consider my application to receive Aegrotat Standing in BCHM 218. I have received the approval of my professor, Professor Allingham, to submit this request.

As is seen by my exam grade in comparison to my other grades in this course, I did not perform to the best of my ability. The reason for this is that I was in hospital 3 days prior and continued to experience symptoms from my illness ever since. During my Ordinary Differential Equations (MATH 225) exam, I fainted and proceeded to vomit. I was rushed to hospital via ambulance (attached please find documentation from Kingston General Hospital Emergency Department). Since my symptoms were still present and the cause was unknown, in the days following this episode I went for medical tests, and when I was not traveling to and from various doctors visits, I was bedridden. Because I hate to ask for extensions/deferrals, I convinced myself I could study for and write the BCHM 218 exam and did not request to defer it - contrary to doctors¿¿ orders. I felt nauseous, dizzy, and fatigued leading up to and throughout the exam and, as a result, did not perform anywhere near my capability (I received a 43 on the final exam and was receiving As and B+s on quizzes, midterms and assignments prior). As a result of this experience, I was granted a deferral for my next exam (please see attached documentation from my family doctor).

I am writing to request to change my final mark to Aegrotat Standing and receive a mark based on the rest of my assignments, midterm and quizzes, excluding the final exam. I am doing so because I do not feel that my final mark reflects my ability or performance in this course and because the illness that I had that resulted in my hospitalization and inability to get out of bed affected my level of preparation and physical ability to write and concentrate on my exam. I now know that it is better to defer an exam then not perform poorly as a result of illness and therefore deferred my BIOL 341 exam which took place the next day (please see doctor's note attached).

Thank you very much in advance for your time and consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.

Warm regards,

Erica Lipworth
