Petition Letter: Bonjour Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am appealing to have my requirement to withdraw reconsidered for the 2017-2018 year. I had an extremely overwhelming year, more notably second semester, due to mental illness as well as having a friend pass away in January. I struggled all semester staying on top of my academics and barely succeeded in doing so. There were many days where I had immobilizing anxiety, and insomnia and could not get out of bed, which was only heightened by the passing away of my friend. Due to this, many of my grades were affected, already impacting my GPA, which is now below the Academic Probation line. My insomnia has been something I¿¿ve struggled with my whole life, and my anxiety only makes it worse, causing more anxiety, and then more insomnia, creating a snowball effect.
Noticing my decline in academic performance, I reached out to my DEVS240 professor, asking him for extensions on my assignments, as I am passionate about Global Development and I know I can succeed in this course, as I found it extremely stimulating. We made an arrangement that I would submit my work before May 29th, and that my mark would be changed once he is finished marking them. This would ultimately improve my GPA and no longer be on academic probation (as I am at the cusp with a 1.58 currently). Unfortunately, before this could happen, I received the letter asking me to withdraw for my studies next year as my grade is currently an ¿¿F¿, causing my GPA to be below the required 1.6. Attached is a letter from my professor, confirming our agreement. I am confident that my work will be more than satisfactory and that my new mark will be enough to improve my GPA. I ask that the requirement to withdraw be reconsidered once this mark has been updated.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I have recently gone to seek help regarding my anxiety and insomnia, (please see note attached) and I plan to continue counseling to help me overcome my anxiety and insomnia, and succeed academically in all future semesters. Should my appeal be granted, I plan on improving my GPA through hard work and perseverance so that I am nowhere near the academic probation line again. I will use all resources available to ensure that my academic performance improves and is up to the Queen¿¿s standards I know I capable of achieving. I have also consulted an academic advisor, and plan on meeting with her regularly to get back on track academically. I also plan on taking summer courses in 2018 to improve my GPA. I know I am capable of achieving in my academics here at Queen¿¿s, and that my current marks are not a reflection of my best work and intelligence.
I am currently not in my plan of choice, which is a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Global Development. I have been taking the DEVS core and eligible courses, and I am on track to getting this degree, once my GPA is improved and I have received permission from the department to be in this program. I plan on taking many DEVS eligibles and succeeding in those as well as the core courses. I will take courses that highlight my strengths for my electives such as French and Geography. I plan on meeting with the DEVS academic advisor in the fall to help me plan my courses for the next four semesters.
If my requirement to withdraw is reconsidered, I would be most grateful and understand the tremendous amount of work needed on my part next year to ensure that this does not happen again. Remaining at Queen¿¿s to get on the right path to success is my ultimate goal, and I now know where and how to obtain proper guidance and support.
