Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
Please accept this letter as my formal appeal of the recent decision to suspend my education. I am appealing the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a minimum of one year and believe that I have a valid reason for my appeal.
For the past year I have been facing extenuating circumstances that have detrimentally affected both my personal mental health and my educational career. I have been encountering family problems that not only had me having to travel back to Toronto often but also left me with depression and terrible anxiety. As a result of the situation and my medical condition, I had very little time or ability to focus on my school work and my education. Knowing that my grades were in jeopardy, and seeing a decline in my well-being, I did take some action and I consulted a personal counsellor that aided me in helping my mental health. Although this did assist me in getting through a very tough year, and was an essential step in regaining my wellbeing, my grades had suffered. In working very closely with this counsellor I was able to attempt focusing on my academics and grades, I couldn¿¿t salvage my year completely and my academics suffered too much to have been repaired.
If given the opportunity to come back to queens this following fall semester, I have taken steps to control my psychological illness and family issues without having to leave queens which I believe was a major factor in my grades suffering. l will continue to work very closely with my counsellor and we have been able to set up the ability skype sessions on a regular basis. Having that support and not having to travel back to Toronto will be an essential step in focusing on my academic career I am certain I can be successful in achieving.
I have also taken a proactive approach for my educational career and I have built an academic plan to ensure my success in the following school year. My plan includes retaking the ethics class I previously failed and along with taking summer courses the next two years so I can catch up to my missing courses without having a heavy course load throughout the year.
My education career, and my success at Queen¿¿s University is very important to me. I am a dedicated and consciousness student, and believe that due to the circumstances and my actions, I can be successful next year. I don¿¿t believe a year off of school will be in my best interest and I urge you to reconsider your decision. I would like to thank you in advance for your time and for the opportunity to appeal.
My sincerest thanks,
Lucas Pittam
