Dear Dean,
Hello, my name is Junho Choi. I am a second year geological science student and I am writing this letter to appeal the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a year.
This year has been a very difficult and painful for me because of two issues.
Throughout the two years at Queen¿¿s, I had suffered from a health problem. My nose was clogged every day. I was not able to breathe without using my mouth. During lectures my nose was constantly running and I couldn¿¿t stay at a desk because of constant sneezing as well. Regardless of multiple visits to the clinic, doctors could not diagnose me nor gave me a solution. I presumed as allergies but it did not make sense to have nose blocked for all year long. Due to these symptoms I had constant headaches even from short period of studying and I could not focus in classes.
Therefore I booked an appointment with a doctor in my country, Korea, and I have found out it was nasal septum deviation. I had a surgery on May 10th and it took a month to recover so I am submitting this letter now. At this point all of the symptoms I had are completely gone. My nose had impacted my studies greatly and I feel that next year will be significantly different since there is no health barrier in my way.
Second issue was misguided major choice. Up to this point my reason for taking economics was following my parents suggestion. Our family had decided for me before entering Queen¿¿s. However, over the course of time I had found out it is not entertaining material for me and my grades reflected accordingly. Thus I have changed my major during the program change few weeks ago to Geological Science. The reason is geology has been my strongest course in high school and at Queen¿¿s too. In grade 12, I earned the highest grade in school in geology and got a trophy, so I have faith in me that I will perform a lot better. I really hope that I can pursue something I actually have talent in and enjoy next year. I worry less of failures, I am more afraid about not getting a chance.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: If I could get a chance to continue my studies next year, I would be able to target my academic goals with higher enthusiasm and passion.
From now on, I no longer have to worry about my academic performance being negatively impacted from physical illness. My nasal problem had prevented me from fully investing time in my school work and consistently resulted in poor academic performance. Now that I have gained my health, I participate classes fully and gain materials property, put more time and quality into my work, and devote myself to school work outside of lecture hours instead of suffering pain.
Another huge improvement that I can guarantee next year is my attitudes towards my studies. My past two years in economics were following my parent¿¿s opinion and guided path, but my third and fourth years will be pursing my interests and goal. Since I was not able to study something that motivates me so classes never entertained me and my effort was not satisfying, but geology is the course that truly stimulates my interest and pushed me to the fullest. I understand it will be hectic to fit all core courses in my schedule without electives, but I am sure that this will be less burdening than taking more economics.
I am very excited to study geology and ready to see my improving performance in September. Please allow me to study and prove myself.
