Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Academic Faculty of Arts and Science,


I am a first year student in the arts and science program. I am writing to request an appeal to waive my requirement to withdraw as well as a re-write of my Biol 102, physics 117 and math 121 exams. I was also wondering if there is a possibility to receive a refund for these courses as well. There were several factors that contributed to my current academic standing. I was emotionally very affected by seeing my mom going to the emergency several times and felt helpless since I was not by her side in these difficult moments. Her health status was fluctuating from one week to another.
Having a very close relationship with my mom, hearing that her health was not improving increased my concerns. It was extremely difficult for me to concentrate on studying for my exams because of this. I went numerous times back home to stay with her and take care of her which as a result, also impacted my studying. I knew how important exams were in order to pass my courses, but I could not concentrate 100 on my studying. I achieved decent marks on my quizzes and assignments for my courses and even received very high marks on all my labs, however the exams brought these grades and my overall gpa down. In addition, I realized that I had taken more courses that I could handle during this difficult situation.
When I have received my final grades from the exams, I was very disappointed. I have always been a 80-90 student throughout my whole academic life and failure is new to me. Having the lesson learned, in the future, I would be taking fewer courses as well, to grant me more time to focus at my full potential. Thank you for taking the time to consider my request.
