Dear Dr. Benard,


I am appealing to drop GNDS 120 (Fall 2016), WRIT 120 (Winter 2017), ENGL 100 (Fall-Winter 2016-2017) and for credit standing in Film 110 (Fall-Winter, 2016-2017)

The extenuating circumstances beyond my control that effected my first year studies at Queens University was I needed accommodations and did not apply for the extra help until January 30th. I used accommodations during high school however when I went to university I thought I would no longer need them and I could get by without help. I personally have always been embarrassed about my learning disability. I was reluctant to ask for extra help when I began Queens, even though my counsellor and parents suggested I should. Looking back I regret not applying sooner because it made a huge difference for my studies and my overall success at school.

Once getting reports back about how I was doing in the fall term I registered for Bounce Back on January 30th, meeting with a third year student who helped to keep me organized, fully aware and prepared for upcoming due dates. I also met with Accessibilities Services on Tuesday March 14th to begin accommodations. However even though I did reach out for help, because I was so late and my grades were so low it was very difficult for me to catch up and improve my marks.

By not getting the accommodations I needed when I started Queens I began doing poorly on tests and examinations. My accommodations allow me to work in separate areas that are more quiet and help me easily focus. They also let me type on a computer which helps me have my ideas written in an efficient and concise matter.

Following my conversation with the Arts and Science Academic Advisor, Spring Forsberg on May 16th, I¿¿ve decided to remain undeclared, retake some courses that I didn¿¿t do well in and register for second year courses if possible. My plan for the future is taking lighter academic course loads each term and trying to take one or two courses each summer to assure I meet academic requirements. I also realize the importance of networks in my studies and plan on reaching out more by befriending fellow classmates and joining study groups. The few connections I had in some of my classes I found made a huge impact in my overall progress. I will continue to use Bounce Back if available to me, and the accommodations from Accessibility Services. I will follow up with both of these programs in the beginning of the fall term. I will try to find a writing tutorial this summer and register for writing help at Queens next year to improve my skills.

Getting the proper help I need and having the opportunity to retake courses, I will improve my GPA and apply for the Film and Media program I wish to pursue.
