To the Associate Dean (Studies):

I am appealing to drop the following courses: CHEM112 (Fall/Winter 2016-2017), STAT263 (Winter 2017), GPHY101 (Winter 2017), GPHY102 (Winter 2017) and DEVS220 (Winter 2017), as well as, I am appealing the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw for one year. I am appealing on the basis that this past term (Winter 2017) there were certain extenuating circumstances that have been beyond my control and therefore have affected my academic performance for the Winter 2017 term.

I began the 2016-2017 school year with a job and 3 courses. After a difficult summer of holding down two jobs and dealing with a few family emergencies I wanted my third year to be different. I finished my fall term not well but better than any of my previous terms at school, financially I was doing ok but living paycheque to paycheque took a bigger toll on my health and I started to see a medical professional who suggested we try different medications. I began my new medication and I thought I was doing better ¿¿ with regular counselling and doctors visits I started to feel better. So, I thought that for the winter term I would be able to take on more courses - I had also gone back to my parent¿¿s house for winter break and while I was there instead of taking steps forward to be better and prepare for the winter term, I dealt with a family emergency that required me to be in the hospital so my winter break unfortunately was very stressful. I returned to school and I thought I was ok to take a full course load, unfortunately this was a huge mistake, one I take full responsibility for however I thought that my medication was helping and I was getting better. As the term went on I had to change my medication, my anxiety got worse, even with regular counselling and doctors visits. The stress of keeping up with school and work and bills took a huge toll on me and I thought that I would at least be able to scrape by but that was not the case. I understand that this is not my first academic appeal and I understand that it might seem as though my situation hasn¿¿t gotten solved however, not returning to school in the fall would not help me in fact I would lose my job for the year, I work as a Server at the AMS Pub Services, and I wouldn¿¿t be able to see my regular doctor or counsellor. If dropping these courses is not possible I urge to please at least withdraw my requirement to withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a year.

I have thought long and hard about my academic plan and I am continuing to see my counselor and doctor to discuss my options. If I am granted this appeal and the courses I listed are dropped I will retake them ¿¿ if I am not granted the appeal to drop the courses however I am able to return to school in the Fall of 2017 I will still retake the courses so that I can get higher marks. When I re-take the courses my first step will be to contact the professors/TAs and discuss with them the best way to succeed in the course ¿¿ as well as I will set up bi-weekly meetings with them to discuss any questions or concerns I might have regarding course content. Along with bi-weekly meetings, I will also be connecting with a tutor for both courses I will take in the Fall and Winter ¿¿ I will begin to see them on a weekly basis until I feel confident to see them on a bi-weekly basis. But, what I believe is the best option for me is to start fresh and I am currently thinking of a plan change which I have connected with an academic advisor with so that I can discuss my options. I believe that the plan best suited for my academic background and strengths is a History degree (BAH) with a potential minor in Environmental Studies. By the end of this week, I will be seeing a Learning Strategist so I can discuss with them my options and the best courses to take for the upcoming school year. I have looked at the Student Academic Success website and all the resources available to me and I will be using those resources so that I can succeed in the upcoming school year ¿¿ by attending workshops such as ¿¿Exam Study Tips¿ as well as their motivation and procrastination workshops, meeting with peer mentors and setting up meetings with the Writing Centre so that I can continue to improve my writing skills which would be a huge benefit if I am granted a plan change. The academic counsellor I have been in contact with as well as my doctor and medical counsellor have both agreed that a reduced course load will lead to my academic success. I will take a maximum of 2 courses per term and if a block on my account is required to not allow me to take more than two courses than of course I would more than happy to oblige.

During the meeting that I will have this week with a learning strategist as well as an academic advisor I will discuss my current summer courses. A History plan does not require me to take a Math or Chemistry course nor does an Environmental Studies minor therefore after the meeting I will ask to drop MATH121 so therefore it does not impact my GPA and therefore I can focus on HIST260. I urge you to please if possible hold of on making a decision about my appeal until I finish my history course so that you are able to see what I am really capable of. This summer I am continuing to see my medical counsellors and academic counsellor to continue to discuss my courses and progress, as well as my mental and physical health ¿¿ my medication is being monitored and I will be taking the summer to get on the right medication so that I do not have extreme side effects during the school year. I am currently working part-time as Onboard Hospitality Staff at Kingston 1000 Islands Cruises as well as I have met with a bank advisor to being a savings account so that I am able to be more financially stable. If I cannot return to school in the fall I will unfortunately lose my job at the AMS Pub Services as I will no longer be a student at Queen¿¿s, this will also cause me to lose my insurance and therefore I will not be able to pay for my medication. Please reconsider your decision to ask me to withdraw, it would not help me, I believe that I would be worse off. But if I am allowed to return to school I will have a part-time job as well as I will be applying for OSAP loans and grants and the Queen¿¿s General Bursary for both the Fall and Winter terms. With a reduced course load and a part-time job as well as taking advantage of the resources available to me at Queen¿¿s and outside of Queen¿¿s I know that I will succeed.

I would like to thank you in advance for your consideration and your time. I am taking steps to better myself, I have had a difficult 3 years and I have had quite a few road blocks but I am human and I make mistakes and I take full responsibility for thinking that I am able to take a full course load but not being able to return to school in the fall would not help me. My anxiety and depression are being treated but going from medication to medication has taken a toll on me and I just need help, which I am seeking help for and will continue to do so until I have managed both my anxiety and depression. I am determined to do better this upcoming school term and I want to get the chance to prove it.

Thank you again for your consideration and your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Klea Asllani
