Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

My name is Bronwyn Greenhalgh and I am a Political Studies major. I am respectfully appealing for an Aegrotat Standing in Canadian Politics (POLS212) and International Politics (POLS261).

My Dad, Robert Greenhalgh, was terminally ill and passed away on April 21, 2017. I was informed in early April that my Dad was not doing well and that it was important for me to go home and spend time with my family. I then stayed for his funeral which was held on April 26, 2017. Due to the extenuating circumstances, I requested an exam deferral for ECON110B (scheduled for April 15, 2017), POLS212 (scheduled for April 19, 2017), POLS261 (scheduled for April 22, 2017), and POLS262 (scheduled for April 27, 2017). All four of my professors granted my deferral and I was excused from each exam. Since then, I have made up my exam for ECON110B on May 17, and I am currently preparing to write my make-up exam for POLS262 on June 26, 2017. Additionally, I have started working at two jobs as planned and begun an online summer course (ECON223) in order to be applicable for an Economics minor.

My academic success has always been extremely important to me and knowing that I have not yet completed some of my exams has been an additional stress. I spoke with an Academic Accommodation Councillor about what my next steps should be and she recommended that I request an Aegrotat Standing. Given the circumstances, I believe that pursuing an Aegrotat Standing for POLS212 and POLS261 is the best way for me to proceed. This past year has been especially hard for me and even so, I have managed to remain in good academic standing. This is due in part to my Dad. He was one of my greatest support systems and I cannot begin to explain how hard this loss has been. As a result, I think that pursuing an Aegrotat Standing for POLS212 and POLS261 will help me begin to move forward while allowing me to remain a successful student. Furthermore, granting me an Aegrotat Standing will allow me to manage my time so that I can focus on studying for my POLS262 make-up exam and allow me to fulfill work and academic commitments that I have previously made.

I appreciate you taking the time to consider my appeal. I am sincerely grateful to my Academic Accommodation Councillor, Caroline Teske, for all of her help and to all of my professors for being so understanding.
