New Information: Academic Plan

I have been given an opportunity not many people get from where I come from, to receive a university education from a prestigious institution such as Queens University. Coming all the way from Nigeria to Canada, it is important that I excel in my academic endeavours in order to ensure success and an advantage in both economic environments. However, the extenuating circumstances during the year did take a huge toll on academics and mental health, and I happened to take the wrong steps in dealing with the difficulties. Being able to look back at the school year in a stress-free situation has provided a whole lot more insight on how to better handle issues dealing with mental health.

With my mother finally relocating from Nigeria to Canada, a lot of the responsibilities that affected my studies in the last year has been taken off my shoulders. Essential steps have been taken to alleviate a lot of the roles I had in the circumstances involving my little sister. I also have ensured to open up to family about my experiences throughout the whole year, and they have offered both their moral and spiritual support in return. I am presently receiving counselling from Catholic Parish resources working towards ensuring a better mental, emotional and spiritual stability in preparation for an excelling upcoming academic year.

In order to successfully complete my goal of receiving a bachelor degree in Economics, in the 2017/2018 Academic Session, I plan on retaking the required courses needed for the completion of my Major in Economics. This would include retaking ECON 212, ECON 222, STAT 263 and a selection of other electives. It is really important that I take back control of my academic future. I have made my academics a priority for this summer and have proceeded to create a summer study plan with an advisor. This plan involves making use of the previous courses syllabus, notes and textbooks to prepare for the upcoming academic year, to ensure a head start that will make my course load a lot easier to handle. It also involves exploring the several steps and resources needed to remain organised and develop an impeccable work ethic needed to achieve academic excellence.

With a better knowledge about myself and my abilities, I have chosen to take this past years¿¿ experience as a learning experience and have accepted all that it entails. This experience as a whole not only taught me the importance of having a support system when dealing with stress, but it also has exposed me to the several resources that Queens University has set up to help students deal with such situations by creating that support system. Knowing that my University is there to help has given me the confidence needed to head into the coming academic session, ready to take control of my future.
