Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am appealing to drop ECON 361 and ECON 422(Winter, 2017). In addition to dropping the aforementioned courses, I am also appealing for Aegrotat estimated standing for DEVS 100 and ECON 430(Winter, 2017).
On February 24th I had a psychotic break which resulted in being admitted to Kingston General Hospital's emergency department and then transferred to the psychiatric ward for observation and treatment. I was in KGH for just under three weeks before returning to classes on March 20th. On March 28th I was admitted to the hospital again, and remained in the psychiatric ward until May 3rd. Upon being discharged on May 3rd I was diagnosed with Bipolar Type I with psychotic episode in partial remission.
In the weeks leading up to my first break on February 24th, I found my thoughts constantly racing and focusing on school was becoming increasingly difficult. During my stay at the hospital I missed midterm exams for ECON 361 & ECON 422, along with assignments due for all four courses. Course material covered over those three weeks was also missed, and due to my mental state I was unable to study the missed content covered over the period.
When I returned to classes on March 20th I was being medicated and found my ability to concentrate, reason, and retain information were inhibited. Attempts at catching up on material were made, however my thoughts began racing again which ultimately led to my second hospitalization on March 28th. Due to the second stay in the psychiatric ward, I missed the last two weeks of classes and all final exams.
When I was released on May 3rd, I was given considerably higher dose of medication, and placed under the care of a physician, psychologist, and social workers. Attempts have been made at catching up on coursework and studying in order to write final exams, however my current treatment plan has severely impaired my ability to do this. Adjustment of medication has been an ongoing activity which has affected cognitive ability, outlook, and mood making it difficult to complete tasks.
It is my understanding that type and level of medication used in my treatment should be resolved by September. I intend on retaking the required courses in the Fall 2017 semester in order to fulfill graduating requirements. If there are still cognitive issues from the medication or otherwise in September I will liaise with the Queen's student accessibility services and arrange accommodations during exams.
