Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies):

I am appealing to get aegrotat standing for my PSYC 205 class on account of mental and physical disabilities. I have completed 70 of the course and the exam was worth 30.

My mental disabilities include bipolar disorder (type II), ADHD (combined type), and generalized anxiety disorder. The bipolar disorder caused me to be in a depressive state (no motivation, suicidal thoughts, fatigue) and on top of that ADHD made it difficult to concentrate. Although it was difficult, I tried my very best to manage my bipolar symptoms and ADHD with medication for the most part. It still impacted my work but I put in extra hours to complete my course work. However, my case is a little bit more complicated because of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia has flares so sometimes it¿¿s manageable with pain medication but sometimes it can be debilitating. It caused extreme fatigue, burning sensations, muscle spasms, and pins and needles feeling which greatly impacted my review time. Anxiety can cause the pain to get worse and when I started getting really sick and fatigued I started to get more and more anxious. The last two weeks of the course were extremely bad and I even had to go to an urgent care twice. At that point the pain was so great that it couldn¿¿t be manageable with the current pain medication I am on. Because of chronic use of the medication, it stopped having any significant effect on me. Because of the pain, I was unable to even move so studies were out of the question. I tried to lay in a dark room or sleep it off because there was very little I could do.

Currently, I am unsure of when it will get better. However, I worked very hard in the class and I believe I was able to demonstrate my knowledge of the material well. I think I deserve aegrotat standing because of how much I tried to manage my situation. It will be hard taking the exam at a later date since fibromyalgia causes extreme forgetfulness. My medication makes my memory even more worse. My future plan is to work with a doctor to find pain management techniques to manage my symptoms. One thing that I am hoping will help is stronger pain medications. I will also be trying other pain management techniques, such as acupuncture, exercise, diet, etc.

Thank you for your consideration,

Saleha Khan
