Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to have the restriction of appealing 21 days in the past removed. I was not aware that there were so many resources available to assist with my mental health issue and academics. Since I have become aware of the services in place to help someone in my position I have begun to try and get all the help I can to be as successful as I can. I was hoping to have the restriction lifted for first semester of this year (Fall 2016) as well as first and second semester of last year (Fall 2015 and Winter 2016).
Since high school I have been struggling with mental health issues, mainly depression. I have found the transition into university to be quite difficult and had the mentality that I had to get through everything on my own. I was afraid to admit to my parents how bad things were getting and was afraid of seeking help. Since university has begun I have started to reach out a little more, I saw a doctor on campus who prescribed me with antidepressants and recommended that I see a counsellor. Since then I have changed my dosage to get me to where I need to be. I have been on highs and lows throughout my time here, but I am focusing on my mental health first so that the academics will get better. Regrettably, during the process of trying to sort out my mental health, my academics have suffered and I have not performed to the best of my ability. When at my worst I was unable to attend class due to panic attacks and feelings of severe depression. On the days that I was able to attend class, my head was full of anxieties and worries beyond the classroom. This made focusing extremely difficult and the notes I could jot down were often incoherent and difficult to follow when I tried to go back and read them after class. I have since met with doctors, counsellors, academic advisors, and academic accommodations. These resources have allowed me to talk to someone about my issues in and out of class. I started to work on my mental health as well as ways I could improve procrastination and effective notetaking.
It was not until I became comfortable enough to communicate my struggles with my friends and family that I realized there were so many resources that were available to help with my mental health issues. Once I opened up to my friends they told me about the student support offered at Queen¿¿s and how I could go about using them to help me in any way possible. I think that my focus is on making sure my mental health is where it needs to be to ensure that I perform how I know I can with my academics. I believe that since I started to seek out help and realize the resources I have begun to better myself and am on the right track in terms of getting my mental health in check, which also means being able to focus on my academics and perform at the level that I know I can. I know that the stress of my academics has had an adverse effect on the state of my mental health, which in turn means my academics suffer and so on. Simply learning about the opportunity to drop some failed courses and changing some grades to credit standings made me feel a huge sense of relief. I know that seeing my grades reflecting what I know I am capable of will make me feel tremendously better. I will continue my efforts of sustaining a healthy mental status and I know this will only make my academic journey better in the long run. I will also be continuing to see my counsellor and communicating with my academic advisors to ensure that I am receiving the help I need to be successful.
Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Hadrianna Zätterberg

If the restriction is lifted I would like the fails in ANAT 316, KNPE 261 and KNPE 227 to be removed from my transcript; the marks in ANAT 315, KNPE 255, HLTH 332 and KNPE 265 bumped or changed to a credit, which from my understanding, is a pass/fail grade; and my received mark was an F in ECON 290 and since I completed at least 60 of the work, obtain an aggregate mark

Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing the grades I received during the fall semester of 2015, winter semester of 2016, and fall semester of 2016. During the fall semester of 2015 I took ANAT 315, and was hoping to get the D grade changed to a credit, which I believe is just a pass/fail standing. During winter semester 2016 I took ANAT 316, KNPE 227, KNPE 255, and KNPE 265. I am hoping to get the ANAT 316 and KNPE 227 grades removed from my transcript; and KNPE 255 and KNPE 265 changed to a credit standing as well. During fall semester 2016 I took KNPE 261, HLTH 332, and ENSC 290. I am hoping to remove my grade from KNPE 261 from my transcript; change my grade in HLTH to a credit standing; and have my ENSC 290 grade of F turn into an aggregate standing since I completed at least 60 of work for the class.
Over the past couple years, I have been struggling with mental health issues, mainly depression. It has been extremely difficult for me to get through the last two years because I was not aware of all the opportunities for aid within Queen¿¿s and the community. I have been taking antidepressants for some time now, and have changed my prescription and dosage a couple times to get me to a place where I feel my best. This process has taken a while, and during this time my mood and mental health status was up and down. This made my academic and emotional journey enormously difficult to live through. I have found that I have been trying to work on getting my mental health more stable while also trying to keep my academics up and, unfortunately, during this process my academics has suffered.
I did not realize there were so many resources available to someone in my situation; my eyes have been opened to all the resources available to me through Queen¿¿s and the community regarding treating and accommodating my mental health issues. I have begun my academic accommodation process and have met with several advisors to help me with my motivation and participation in classes. I feel like I am on the right track with my mental health issues and hope that this means that my academics can be where I would like them to be. If I can get my depression under control, then I can have more time to spend on my academics and focusing on being a student and interacting with peers and professors instead of always being worried about my depression.
Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Hadrianna Zätterberg

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Dear Associate Dean,
I have decided that it is best for my mental health as well as my academics if I take some time away from the pressure I¿¿ve faced at school. I have enrolled as a part-time student in two classes per semester, so to not overwhelm myself during this time of healing. I am planning on living with a family in Ireland during this time, where I will have full access to my courses with my computer and their wireless internet. My family and I hope that this will be a time of restoration and self-discovery. My courses will still be through Queen¿¿s University, and I have signed up for out of country proctors in case of examinations throughout my courses. I am confident that if I can get my mental health status in check then I will be able to perform at school as well as any other student. I am truly passionate about my education and will do everything in my power to finish my degree with respectable marks.
My plan is to take this in stride. I know that I am not in a place right now where I can take on too much in terms of academics. Much of my anxiety came from the combination of assignments, participation and contribution that regular courses require. I think that if I can work on my own, at my own pace with these online courses, as well as better my mental health, that I will be able to return to school next year and obtain the marks I know I can achieve. I am certain that the marks I have received over the past couple of semesters are not a proper demonstration of the work I can accomplish. During the academic year, I would try to tell myself that there was not anything wrong with me and that I just needed to push through, but this only made things worse. I realize now, after seeking assistance, that I must embrace and understand what is going on to be able to overcome it and grow. When my mental health is in check and I am comfortable with returning to Queen¿¿s University, I plan on finishing my undergrad in two year instead of the one I have left. I believe that this will allow me to take my time with my courses and not rush me back into the state I was before. Once I complete my undergrad I am hoping to attend college to become an ultrasound technician. This is something that interests me a great deal and I trust that I am capable of doing this job. The medial field has always interest me, and the idea of helping people motivates me.
Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Hadrianna Zatterberg
