Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am appealing to take third year courses away on a letter of permission for the Winter 2015 academic semester. I am unable to take these courses at Queen¿¿s as I am mentally unfit to spend a full academic year away from home in Vancouver. I have struggled with my mental health for many years, which has greatly affected my academic performance. I have required Academic Accommodation on and off for the past two years and have previously appealed courses from my first year at The Bader International Study Centre due to these reasons. After taking a semester off in the fall of my third year, I managed to excel in my studies for the following year. Determined to graduate from Queen's, I did not want to transfer or drop out due to my health issues, so I have done everything in my power to maintain my grades and remain at Queen's. I have now made the decision that I need to return home in order to focus on my health, while regretting not being able to finish my final year at Queen's.
After speaking with Dr. Hugh Horton, we came to the decision that a Change of Plan from Art History-Sociology Medial to Sociology Major-Art History Minor was most suitable for me. Dr. Horton has since changed this for me. This plan will allow me to take two SOCY400 level seminars and three SOCY(unsp) in the Fall 2014 semester to contribute to my Sociology Major. This Fall I am enrolled in SOCY275, 284, 362, 422, and 476. For a Sociology Major plan I require 6 units at SOCY(unsp) and 6 units and SOCY300(unsp), which I hope to take at The University of British Columbia during the Winter 2015 semester. In the Winter 2015 semester I will take two courses at the 200 level and two at the 300 level. Dr. Martin Hand has deemed any 200/300 level Sociology courses offered at UBC to be appropriate equivalencies to Queen¿¿s offered courses, which has been attached. After the Winter 2015 semester, I will have completed my undergraduate requirements for a Sociology Major-Art History Minor from Queen¿¿s University.

I hope you deem this to be an acceptable plan and grant me permission to take my final year away from Queen¿¿s.
