Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear associate dean,
I am writing to appeal to drop PSYC 271 from my academic record.

I have struggled with depression and anxiety since 9th grade. In high school, when it first manifested, I didn't understand that t was not a normal emotional response to everyday stresses and disappointments in life. As I matured and my academic responsibilities became more pronounced and I delved further into a depressed state. I did not share this with anyone because I assumed that I could handle it myself and eventually overcome it. Although I did not share this with parents, noticing my unusual behavior and because of my sisters depression, they did encourage me to seek help. Finally at the end of my first semester at the bader international study centre, I realized that I needed medical help and started to see a professional. Less than a month ago, my grandfather died. His death caused a spiral deeper into my depression than I had ever been before. I could not get myself up in the morning. And barely had enough energy to shower. I found my self unable to complete assignments because of a fog that had come over my brain enabling me from thinking or retaining any information that I had just read as little as 5 minutes ago. I had trouble sleeping. Even if I fell asleep at 9 pm I would toss and turn and only half-sleep until I would be exhausted from attempting to sleep that I would wait for my alarm to wake me up. I was constantly exhausted and barely had the energy to eat. I eventually decided I was no mental state to even attempt to take my PSYC final.

I am still seeing a psychologist, and will continue to, every Thursday and am taking medicine to help with my depression. I am afraid if next semester does not go somewhat better, I may not be coming back to Queen¿¿s second semester.

Thank you,
Diana Ingham
