Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
My name is Yousef Abdel-Kader, a second-year student at the Faculty of Arts & Science. I am appealing to drop BISC101 and DEVS100 courses, which I have taken while attending the Bader International Study Centre (BISC) during the 2016-2017 academic year. The former (3.0 units) was taken during Winter 2017 while the latter was a year-long course (6.0 units). Unfortunately, I failed the two courses, which brought down my GPA to 1.2 placing me on academic probation.
The reason I am appealing to drop these courses late is that I have been silently suffering from symptoms of depression since late October 2016. At first, my symptoms were moderate and I was able to perform reasonably in my classes. As the academic year advanced and course work intensified, I got overwhelmed and anxious more, which caused me to lack motivation. Many of my courses were affected by my condition, especially the ones that required critical thinking, including BISC101, DEVS100, and POLS110.
Unfortunately, I have not been able meet the deadline for dropping the courses due to lack of motivation and lost interest formed by my condition. At last, I have visited my doctor yesterday to see if my symptoms are linked to my previous condition (Attention Deficit/ADD), for which I was diagnosed in 2013. He performed some tests and informed me that I have been suffering from moderate-to-severe depression, which has caused the poor academic performance (please see letter and report attached). He prescribed a medication to treat my condition.
My future plan to deal with my condition and improve my academic performance includes retaking DEVS100, which I already registered for, as I would still like to major in Global Development. Unfortunately, I can not retake BISC101, which is taken only at the BISC. Per the advice of one of the academic advisors I met earlier in the summer, I plan to distribute my course load more evenly over the academic year (taking 12 units in both fall and winter semesters and 6 units in the summer as opposed to taking 15 units in both fall and winter). I will also use the resources available on campus and network with my friends who could help me succeed. To address my extenuating circumstances, I plan on seeking counselling services on campus, seeing my doctor in Washington on a regular basis, and taking my medication as prescribed.
I am really hoping that my appeal to drop the above-mentioned courses late will be accepted. This should help reduce the level of stress caused by the academic probation I am currently on while I deal with my extenuating circumstances. I am also hopeful that the plan I explained above will help me improve my academic performance and succeed overall.
With many thanks for your understanding and support.
Yours Sincerely,
Yousef Abdel-Kader
