Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies),
Following a consultation with Dr. Tonya Bauermann, my counsellor at Student Wellness Services, I am asking to appeal to drop CHEM 212 Principles of Chemical Reactivity¿from Fall 2016 after the deadline because I failed the course. When I started as a Chemistry major I struggled with the content and work load. I have ADHD and as a result I found it difficult to stay focused in class, and it would take me longer than most students to write lab reports. I spent so much time working on lab reports that I didn¿¿t have enough time to study the content which led me to failing my exam.
Last semester, I used various resources at Queen¿¿s such as Learning Strategies, the Writing Center, my professor¿¿s office hours, tutoring, and the Adaptive Technology Center. Although I found these resources helpful, it wasn¿¿t sufficient enough to address the issues I faced in Chemistry 212. I have since dropped Chemistry as my major and will be majoring in English in the new school year. I want to apply to go on exchange next year and I feel this failure is hindering my GPA and my potential for acceptance into international programs.
In this semester I plan to continue my studies in English and finish with a Bachelor of Arts degree. I will continue seeing Dr. Bauermann for regular counselling and I will use the Writing Center for writing consultation and the Adaptive Technology center for a quiet work space. If I struggle in English, I will approach learning strategies for assistance and possibly seek help from a tutor.
Thank you for your consideration,
Caitlyn Goss
