Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

I am writing to appeal three things; I wish to appeal for a late drop of my CISC 223 and CISC 260 courses, as well as an Aegrotat Standing in MATH 121. About two years ago I was diagnosed with major depression and anxiety and this has had a major impact on my work. I've kept open dialogues with my professors throughout the semesters and they've been aware of my situation and have been extremely helpful throughout everything. My professors (Kai Salomaa in CISC 223, Juergen Dingel in CISC 260 and Alan Ableson in MATH 121) have each agreed to support my appeal. I have also been in contact with David Lamb regarding CISC 223 and he has been supportive as well.

Over the past 8 or so months I've been cycling through several different medications to try and find something that works for me consistently, but it hasn't been easy. I'm trying to see a councillor regularly and I check in with my Toronto doctor when I can. My mental health has been an on-going battle for me and it has had a significant impact on my work, especially around exams. My anxiety reaches near-extreme levels around exam time and I've checked myself into Hotel Dieu more than once. This is the primary reasoning for appealing for an AG in MATH 121 - I have attempted the course about 3 times and have completed all or most of the course work, except for the exams where I completely fall apart. Professor Ableson has been very gracious and understanding with all of this. As well, because of the lengthy dialogue I've had with Professor Ableson, I believe we agreed that a past note about my condition would suffice for this appeal. But if I need to get a new note please let me know and I should be able to provide one.

My condition has also negatively affected my work in CISC 223 and CISC 260. After many discussions with Professors Salomaa, Dingel and Lamb, we've decided that a late drop is my best course of action.

None of this has been easy for me and it's still an uphill climb, but I'm trying to get better so I can finish everything and graduate with a degree. Thank you.
