Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing to drop my grades after the deadline for GPHY 209 Principles of Hydro Climatology (Winter 2016), GPHY 208 Principles of Geomorphology (2015 Fall) and LLCU 101 Beginning Language and Culture Portuguese 1 (2013 Fall).
The reason I am asking for an appeal on these marks is due to many extenuating circumstances that I experienced in first year, and particularly in the third year of my undergraduate degree. I am currently in my final year of my undergraduate and suffer from anxiety and depression that directly affects my school performance. I am in the Canadian Forces Army Reserves and must commute from Kingston to Toronto on a regular basis, and during my third year I was also balancing these factors with my residence position as a Don. The military and residence don position were both highly demanding for time commitment and with my career in the Canadian Forces, requiring me to be in the Toronto area for training on a regular basis to avoid being penalized as a non-effective soldier. While balancing these commitments, I was also struggling with my mental health daily. Despite these very real stresses, I did not drop my courses before the deadline as I had faith that I could manage to pass by attending my classes, studying and completing assignments, not wanting to believe that there was simply too much for me to handle in my life. I attended my first appointment this month with a Queen¿¿s Student Wellness Centre psychologist, and was directed that I may have a possible chance of appealing such marks after the deadline due to these circumstances, a process that I was not aware of prior.
My goal is to apply for the University of Ottawa Consecutive Education to become a teacher in an eventual high school setting in Ontario¿¿s northern communities. By dropping these marks, it would greatly increase my ability to achieve these aspirations and excel in my passion for teaching.
I have developed a plan to ensure academic success by using the Queen¿¿s University Student Wellness Services to aid in understanding and combatting my anxiety and depression, as well as working with my career to create a more flexible schedule with the Canadian Forces Army Reserves. Furthermore, I have also met with student services for further academic plan success. I take my education seriously, and I very much want to succeed in my future endeavours. Thank you for your consideration in this appeal.

Sincerely,

David Chandler, 10110486
