Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am appealing to drop ANAT 315 (Fall, 2017) without any academic penalty. My diagnosed chronic anxiety worsened as a result of taking this third- year anatomy course this semester. Due to my severe anxiety leading up to the testing periods, my ability to concentrate was compromised. Although I reached out to a tutor from the ASUS Peer Tutoring service and received help from her various times, my symptoms continued to worsen. These extenuating circumstances were beyond my control and affected different aspects of my work in this course. For example, during the bell ringer examination I was unable to perform to the best of my abilities due to drastic shakiness, an inability to think properly, and apply all of the knowledge I gained while studying. Beginning around October 30th, I had started to consider dropping this course. However, my parents and others who support me kept encouraging me to stick it out. I felt significantly pressured to stay in this course for a few more weeks. For an extended period of time, I kept contemplating whether or not I should drop this course before the drop date. This also caused me increased anxiety. I have been unable to complete academic responsibilities for Anatomy 315 for approximately 4 weeks, and despite my best efforts, I have finally come to the conclusion I need to drop this course. Soon after I became aware that my anxiety was increasing, I sought the help of my physician in Toronto. She has been reviewing techniques I can use to lessen my anxiety so that I can successfully complete the rest of my courses this semester. I am trying to manage my circumstances to the best of my abilities. As well, I am continuing to receive tutoring by the ASUS Peer Tutoring Service for many of my courses. This will further ensure I stay on top of my work and am prepared for all future examinations. Lastly, I have decided on adjusting my academic focus. After meeting with several Arts and Science Student Service Advisors, I have made the decision to apply to change programs in May. I have come to the conclusion that Kinesiology is not the right academic path for me, and I have altered my courses for the Winter semester accordingly. I hope to be admitted into a Major in Economics for the 2018-2019 school year.
Sincerely,
Felicia Lia Aiello
