Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am writing to you to appeal to waive the 21 day deadline and drop PSYC 100 (Summer, 2017) due to extenuating circumstances which were beyond my control.
For the past 6 months I have been struggling with a concurrent mental health and addiction disorder. After completing the winter semester with a 72 average, following discussions with professors to grant accommodations and seeking help from student wellness services. I believed I would have been able to complete a summer course to further aid in increasing my GPA. However, being at home and away from specific academic and mental health resources caused a great increase in stress and triggers which fueled another depressive episode and in turn negatively impacted my addiction.
Prior to attending a 28 day residential treatment program, I attended various meetings geared towards arresting addiction. As a means to allow me to continue my day to day activities, such as course work. Although, I took steps to aid my concurrent disorder they were not helpful in giving me the intensive type of treatment which was necessary. As a result, my mental health issues worsened and I was unable to perform any course work along with basic day to day activities. Ultimately, causing me to visit the emergency room at CAMH where I stayed overnight. Following this stay, I attended a 28 day residential treatment program as mentioned above at Renascents Graham Munro Centre and am currently within their outpatient program as a means to continue working on my recovery. After completing around half of the outpatient program, I believe I am now in a place to be able to work on rebuilding some of the things that were hurt during the time my concurrent bipolar disorder was active. As, I have various resources at my current disposal, such as counsellors, mental health professionals and social workers.
Should my appeal be granted, I intend to continue working on my recovery with the hopes of returning to school this coming January. My plans for recovery include to continue attending the outpatient program I am currently in along with attending a 12-week group program on Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and weekly counselling sessions with my therapist at CAMH. This appeal would greatly aid in my ability to succeed academically as it would improve my GPA along with remove a great amount of stress in regards to my academic performance moving forward.
