Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

My request: I am appealing to drop CISC 220 (Fall, 2017) past the deadline to drop courses.

Extenuating circumstances: The extenuating circumstances this semester that have lead me to need to make this request is I have been struggling with my mental health for the past month. This struggle made it very difficult to keep on top of my studies as I was having difficulty sleeping and felt extremely anxious, overwhelmed and demoralized. I was unable to attend numerous classes (3 weeks worth) for these reasons and fell far behind in all five of my courses. I have chosen to request to drop CISC 220 as it is the only course I am currently taking that is not required for my degree plan. In addition, it is the course I am having the most trouble catching back up in. One reason why this course is especially hard to catch-up on has to do with specifics of the course delivery this semester. The professor has recently admitted to falling behind in the class syllabus: making the amount of current work for the class uniquely overwhelming. I find it is causing me a lot of added stress which is making it even more difficult to cope with my mental health issues that have arisen this semester. Given my compromised state at the moment I need to prioritize catch-up time on my other courses - those required for my degree. When I first started struggling I was trying to correct my issues on my own with the support of my parents and friends but I soon realized that I needed more help. I have since sought out the help of Student Wellness Services and am currently working with them to get back on track. I am just hoping that my struggles this semester won't have such a drastic effect on what I have achieved so far in my university career.

Future plan: I plan on scheduling regular counseling appointments going forward to make sure I don't fall behind in this way again. I am also planning to take a summer course to make up for the lost credits this semester.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Katie Baker
