Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies;
I am appealing to drop SOCY 275 (Fall, 2017). This is due to extenuating circumstances that have been beyond my control. Since the Winter Term of 2017, I have had semi-regular visits to Student Wellness Services in Lasalle on campus due to mental health issues that were affecting my courses, however in the final week of September, the issues escalated and the affect on my courses became more severe. I found myself unable to go to classes or to submit my work in a timely manner, due to physical manifestations of my mental issues, despite regular Skype conversations with my psychologist in Toronto, as well as receiving additional accommodations to my pre-existing ones. Unfortunately this flare up of my condition occurred while the coursework in SOCY 275 began to increase (two exams worth 25 of my grade each, and the term paper worth 30 within this time period), severely hindering my ability to perform to the best of my abilities, and even to attend my required lectures at all.
In order to deal with the issues that have plagued me, I have discussed with my psychiatrist to adjust the medication that I take to treat my illness. Additionally, she endorsed my decision to lighten my course load in order to take some of the pressure off me, by appealing the drop this course, and taking only four courses next semester as opposed to the five that I had previously planned to take. Additionally, I have received a temporary accommodation from Student Wellness Services that allows me to complete all outstanding coursework from my other courses until the final day of the Fall term, so as to alleviate some of the stress during the exam period. These adjustments will allow me to get back on the proper course in order to salvage the semester and give me a stronger opportunity to succeed in the upcoming one, and prepare me for success in the rest of my years at Queen's University.
I hope that you will consider my appeal and I look forward to hearing from you in the coming weeks.
Thanks,
Jonathan Karr
