Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:

I am submitting this academic appeal for the to obtain a credit standing for MICR 221 (winter 2016 term) and PHGY 214 (fall/winter 2016 terms).

I was a victim of an excruciating circumstance during my second year at Queens. I started seeing my counsellor, Dr. Arunima Khanna, at the Student Wellness Centre to help me cope with it. My grades were affected because of what had happened to me. I went through a very painful experience and it was hard for me to recover from it. In my third year, I worked in residence at Queens University. During that time, I had an encounter with a student which reminded of my painful past. I couldn¿¿t keep up with my school work because I felt as if I already had too much to deal with.

In my third year, I filed an academic appeal to get 3 courses credited and one of them dropped. However, I did not include my second-year courses because I had missed the 21-day/one term appeal deadline. I was unware that exceptions can be made when this deadline is missed under excruciating circumstances. On the 22nd of November 2017, I met with academic advisor Lori Kilminster to talk about my requirements for my application for accelerated nursing programs. During this conversation, I found out that I could have included my courses from my second year in my academic appeal that I made in third year. I realized that I had made a great mistake. When I filed my academic appeal in third year, I was still struggling to recover from what had happened to me. I wanted to bounce back and I thought that filing an academic appeal would be the first right step to take. Even though I was in the right path, I didn¿¿t do it properly. I could have included my courses from second year and I didn¿¿t because of my lack of knowledge. My counsellor at the Student Wellness Centre, Dr. Arunima Khanna, can vouch to my experiences.

I know that I am capable of doing much better under normal circumstances and this is why I believe that I should be granted an academic appeal. I have shown improvement in my grades in winter 2017 and I believe it is reflective of my continuous efforts. I believe that having the courses from second year credited would also help me with my nursing applications.

I¿¿m very proud of my journey at Queen¿¿s as it has helped me realized what I am truly passionate about. In my second year, after the excruciating incident, I started volunteering at the Kingston General hospital, Providence Manor, Martha¿¿s table (soup kitchen) and many other programs targeting the vulnerable population in Kingston to distract myself. I thought that being kind to others would remind me to be kind to myself. The nurses who worked in the mental health unit of the Kingston General Hospital became my biggest inspirations. I was amazed by the amount of care and support they were able to provide for their patients. This is where my passion for nursing comes from. I truly believe that having these courses credited would help me get into a nursing program.
