Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am appealing to drop this course because otherwise I will fail the requirements of my academic probation. I have struggled with a severe anxiety disorder throughout my studies as well as major depression throughout most of this year. Any required medical information on this subject and how it applies is involved in my supporting documentation.

My mental health issues have impeded by ability to perform my studies because I have spent most of my time at Queens paralyzed by anxiety, which became even worse with the depression. I am in a field of study that is not concurrent with my interests that I entered on the advice of those around me because I have always had a talent for math and logic.

I missed the first portion of the course up to and past the midterm, however after starting a new line of treatment in November, mentioned in the supporting document, I have been able to complete the work well. On the two assignments that were left after i started treatment i received marks of 15/17 and 14/15, showing that in my proper state i am able to at least meet the standards set forth by the university.

I reached out to the professor of the course about receiving an incomplete designation and making up for the work I missed but she told me it would require to much work on her end and that i should retake the course.

I believe I can succeed and thrive within this school now that I am receiving treatment but if i do not drop this course i will be forced to withdraw.

I understand that having a plan moving forward leads credibility to this and have taken the time to build a plan for the upcoming year if this appeal is granted. After writing this i am also reaching out to the student accommodation services in order to get psychiatric help in Kingston and accommodations for work. I will also change my course plan to the software design program as I have a strong passion for computers and technology, and am naturally talented in this field of study.
I have also reached out to my family as well as my housemates in Kingston and told them of my situation. They are all ready to support me with any further struggles i have and making sure i succeed.
I am prepared to retake this course as well as any others i need to bring my marks up next term, and will continue with the new course plan after this, taking a reduced course load if necessary. I am prepared to remain in my studies for a fifth and sixth year as required to complete my program.
