Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,

I am filing an academic appeal for Aegrotat standing for CISC 102 class, fall 2017 semester. I have completed 60 of the course load (written all 4 quizzes). The reason why I¿¿m filing an academic appeal is because 4 weeks ago I had a relapse with depression. I have been struggling with acute stress and anxiety because of the death of a family member. This had led me to have a crisis, where I had to use the resources of a crisis line for safety.

I am currently in my fourth year and still an economics major, but would like to officially switch to computing but I need CISC 102 to officially do so. I made the mistake to write CISC 102 exam in previous times when I wasn¿¿t ready to like in Winter 2016 after I was hospitalized for an overdose.

This relapse directly affected my academic performance with focusing on homework and assessments, as well as missing class the two weeks of class, which were critical to maintaining good grades.

This relapse has not just affected my performance on this particular course but all my other courses. I had a A- and B range going into my last tests for CISC 204 and CISC 203 but because of my relapse my performance was affected and my marks dropped (CISC 203 & 204 don¿¿t have final exams) based on my last test¿¿s marks. COMM 200 was also affected as I missed meetings with my team for 45 of our group project work in the last two weeks of class.

Because of the added pressure of being in fourth year and needing CISC 102 to officially switch into computing, my relapse, and the death of a close family member ¿¿ I do not think I am ready to write the exam and would like to appeal for Aegrotat standing.

This was an unexpected event, however, in order to learn to cope better (as I¿¿ve been learning and improving) my psychiatrist will be increasing the dosage of my new medication. I will also be seeing the school counsellor on a more regular basis (every 2-3 weeks) instead of having to wait until going home (Oakville) to see my personal psychologist for check ins/updates. I will also be getting an official assessment next semester as my doctors believe I might have ADHD, for the following semester because of my ongoing struggle to focus for long periods of time like three hour exams. I did COGMED an ADHD training program over the summer to help with my concentration but all the insurance money was used on it so I have to wait until next year to get an official assessment and in order to get actual accommodation for final exams.
