Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am appealing 3 courses which I failed or got a d- in in 2nd year. I am appealing to waive the late deadline because at the time, I was suffering from mental health issues which prevented me from appealing. I had planned to drop out of Queen's and attend another university, but decided ultimately to come back.
At the time, I was suffering from depression and anxiety, which led to a suicide attempt. I had been a victim of sexual assault, and my mental health had deteriorated to the point where I didn't believe passing my courses was possible, and I didn't see the point in appealing because I didn't believe I could graduate. After taking several months to think about my future and work on my mental health, I came back to Queen's, but didn't realize I could appeal after the deadline. I believed that I had to live with my grades. Now I am in fourth year, and after spending my summer interning at the UNODC in Nairobi and being nominated for the Tricolour Award, I am seeing that these grades are affecting my future. A friend appealed her grade and I was informed that I could appeal late, and so I am doing this now.
I understand that to appeal my grades after so long is unusual, however I have come such a long way from 2nd year, and I see real success in my future. I am hoping that Queen's can understand that my successes and failures shouldn't be linked to my mental health issues, and that my past record will show that since 2nd year, I have worked extremely hard to make up for the one year that seems to continually affect my gpa and my future. I have volunteered extensively at Queen's over the past two and a half years, and I was awarded the Universities Canada Award for my academic standing and contributions to the community at the BISC. I truly didn't realize I was able to appeal so late, and although I understand it is rare to waive this deadline I believe my extenuating circumstances should be taken into account.

Petition Letter
Petition Letter: My extenuating circumstances began at the end of my first year at Queen's. I had suffered from anxiety before, however being away from my support system was extremely hard for me, and I was sexually assaulted months previous, leading to an onset of severe depression. Coming into my second year, I was still suffering from the effects of these circumstances, and was often unable to attend class or get out of bed at all. This culminated in two suicide attempts, one in October and one in January. Multiple times before I had attempted to get help. I had reached out to the peer support centre, gone to Student Wellness services with suicidal thoughts, gone to the clinic at Hotel Dieu Hospital and eventually ended up at KGH, only to be turned away and told to see my family doctor. I did not have a good support system at Queen's at the time, and eventually had to move out of my student housing because the people I had chosen to room with were overtly hostile and actively contributed to my depression and suicidal thoughts. I eventually went on medication for depression, however this only made my mental health worse, and I cycled through several medications before deciding to go off of medications in general. Throughout this time, I was a full time student and doing my best to succeed at Queen's, but my anxiety had gotten to a point where I was unable to attend tutorials, and I could not find motivation to attend class. I attended counseling, and spent the summer after my second year volunteering in Turkey. Coming back from this, I actively prioritized my mental health and began to build a support system, and since then I have become extremely active in the clubs on campus, I have been achieving high grades in my courses. I attended the BISC and was the top of my class, and received the universities Canada award for my contrbutions to the community. I am extremely lucky to be where I am today, and am appealing because I see the possibilities for my future. I plan on applying to grad school and applying for competitive jobs, however my grades from second year are now detrimental to those goals. Looking at my transcripts, it is easy to see that I can achieve at high levels and I am currently invested in succeeding, and I don't want my mental health issues to affect my future. I want to clarify that I don't expect to get credit for the failed courses I am appealing, I only want to remove the failed grades from my transcript and get CR in the courses I did not fail. I also know you will be reaching out to my professors, however I am afraid that since it's been three years and they were large second year classes, they may not remember or support my appeal. Regardless, I am appealing because I know that I had the potential to achieve, and the only reason for my falling grades was my mental health.
Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I am currently in my 5th year of study, about to graduate. I spent last summer interning for the UN office on drugs and crime, and I hope to either attend grad school or get a job in international relations. I have been active on campus, as chief of staff for QMUNi, manager for Oxfam Queen's Fair Trade Snack Bar, director for International Development Week and much more. While I have made a lot of progress since my second year, I am always actively looking to support my mental health and will continue to implement good practices for mental health and continue to seek success. From Winter 2016 to now I achieved a 3.48 GPA and I plan to continue these good grades this semester.
