Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,
On the first day of October 2017, I received word from home (South Africa) that a close relative of mine was in the process of passing. This was an incredibly hard time for me, not only because I am still new to Queens (lack any close emotional support) but because of my close relationship with the now deceased relative. Due to this unforeseen circumstance, I had to leave Canada immediately and contacted my professors via email regarding any missed work I might be able to stay caught up on. Although I tried my hardest, due the circumstance of my leave and lack of internet connection for a while, I fell very behind. Upon arrival back to Queen's on October 13, I was overwhelmed with work and such significant stress that I was forced to meet with my department head where I decided to drop ECON 222 (using the same appeal process which still may be on file with all documentation). Throughout the remainder of the year, I tried my hardest catching up and attending all my classes but having had no time to grieve, my grades started to lack. Hence, this appeal is regarding my request to have ECON 212 and ECON 280 counted as a CR as I wholeheartedly believe my academic potential was not met: reflected in the poor grades I received at the finale of the course. Over the past couple of weeks (winter break), I was able to reunite with my family in South Africa and get some much-needed closure, hence am feeling more confident with my state of mind coming into the winter term. After some talk with my mother, I may seek a counselor depending on how things go in the beginning of the term.
