Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
This past semester, I have struggled immensely with my mental health. At one point, I had to go home so I would be monitored 24/7 to make sure I wouldn't do anything detrimental to my health. I kept a daily journal over last semester, as recommended by a queen's counselor, and found that even though I was on medication for depression, my anxiety still felt out of my control and would trigger periods of depression that would prevent me from getting up and going to class. My attendance for SPAN 204 was perhaps the worst for any class I've been in. I also had a lot of trouble taking tests and participating in class. I found that the format of the class caused my anxiety to rear it's ugly head, making my body shake and my mind blank. This, unfortunately, coupled with my professor's preference to call on students randomly, made for some very lackluster participation on my part. However, I did try incredibly hard to at least say something in Spanish even though it often came out indistinguishable from gibberish. I also had quite a severe panic attack thirty minutes before my SPAN204 final. It was very difficult for me to move and my roommate had to practically carry me to my exam location.
About 3 days before my final exam, I had an appointment with Dr. Ritsma, a doctor in the LaSalle building, and she prescribed my medication for ADHD. Though this did not help me take my final at the end of last semester, I have found that it has helped immeasurably so far this semester. I am able to complete and comprehend readings in record time, and finish work with ease. I also no longer find it as difficult to get my self up, showered, and ready for the day. Just today, My French professor made myself and a few others create and perform a skit, and though I was slightly nervous, it was nowhere near debilitating, as it was before. I hope to continue with this positive trend, and hopefully this semester, and all future ones, will prove far more positive than the last.
I have attached an extra document detailing my symptoms and conditions from my psychologist from home. Though it is from my freshman year, I experienced the same symptoms last semester and hope it will still be off use.
I sincerely hope and feel quite confident that this will my last appeal I will ever submit. Thank you so much for your patience and consideration.
