Petition Letter

Petition Letter: January 25, 2018

To the Associate Deans (Studies):

I am currently a second-year undergrad student majoring in economics. As of right now, I am enrolled in ECON 111, MATH 126, ECON 212, and ECON 222 and am attempting to declare health studies as my major this upcoming May. For this semester (winter 2018) I would like to appeal to add 2 courses late, HLTH 331 and HLTH 101 (online), both of which have only 1 section, and to drop ECON 111, 212, and 222.

Over the course of my undergraduate studies I have had chronic back pain and as a result, I had to take a leave from school early November of last semester (2017) until January 8, 2018, when the winter term began. Due to my illness, I had to drop ECON 111, and defer my final exam for STAT 263 until this term. I wrote my MATH 126 Christmas exam on 20 January 2018 and have finished my HLTH 230 requirements on 19 January 2018.

Early in this term, I realized that I wanted to make the switch into health but I was distracted from changing courses before the deadline as my family was dealing with my grandmother who was diagnosed with cancer only last month and taking into hospice care on January 9, 2018. Sadly, she declined very rapidly and passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018. As you can understand, this has been a very stressful time for me and my family.

For these reasons, I am seeking an appeal to add the two courses mentioned above. I have permission from both Professor Tracy McDonough and Anna van der Meulen to take the HLTH 331 and am waiting to hear back from the HLTH 101 professor. As well as drop the three economics courses: ECON 111, ECON 212, and ECON 222.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I have been attending the HLTH 331 lectures as of week 3 and will continue to attend the upcoming lectures until the outcome of my appeal is known. I have 2 housemates who are taking that course and I will be going over lecture slides and the course outline with them to stay up to speed with the course. Additionally. Professor McDonough has agreed to let me submit upcoming assignments at the time they are due and leave them unmarked in a folder until the outcome of my appeal. This way if I am accepted into the class, my work can be marked and I can avoid having to do supplementary work to catch up. The HLTH 101 course is only offered online at this time and I am unable to access the lectures unless I am enrolled in the course but 1 of my housemates took the main campus HLTH 101 course last year and has given me her lecture notes, exam review, and textbooks so I can have a good idea of the content.

The reason I am applying for an appeal instead of waiting for another semester to enroll is that I need at least a B+ in HLTH 101 to apply for health studies and I need to be in health studies to take the majority of the health courses for my third year. If I wait to take the health 101 course in another semester, I would be unable to apply for the major and have to wait until May 2019 and be unable to take any other courses for my major in my third year. This would put me behind and I would have to take at least 1 additional year for my undergraduate degree. As for HLTH 331, I already have the prerequisite and it will give me a slight head start on my major because I am trying to do everything I can to graduate on time with my class of 2020.
