Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Associate Dean,
I am appealing to add HLTH 101 (winter 2018). I was planning on applying to the Life Sciences plan this May however I came to realize that I needed 27 units to be considered, while I will only have 24 by the end of the semester. I did not become aware of this fact until after the add date for classes had passed and so couldn't add any classes to be able to obtain the last three units that I need. Without these units I will not be considered for Life Sciences and will not be able to follow through with my goals for my time at Queens. I have already looked at some of the course work for HLTH 101 and am aware of the work that I have missed so far. I also have friends who are taking this course and are willing help me catch up on the information that I have missed. As this is an online class my joining late will not disrupt other student's learning and will not take up class space, nor will I have missed any in-lecture information. I recognize that this is due to poor planning on my part however I would hate for my goals at Queens to be disrupted because of this error. In the future I will be sure to make certain that I am taking all the classes and getting all the units I need in order to successfully achieve my academic plans and goals at Queens.
Thank you,
Madeleine Powell

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Academic Plan
My Degree Plan is to do a Major in Life Science. This year I am taking all the first year required courses that are prerequisites for the upper year Life Science courses. I need to add HLTH 101 to achieve the required number of units to be considered for Life science, however it is not a required course for a major in Life Science.
I recognize that I will have to catch up on at least 3 weeks of work in this course, along with continuing my work in my other courses. I am not currently struggling to keep up in any of my other courses however I recognize the strain that adding this course late may put on that therefore I intend to schedule a 2-hour period every day in order to catch up on readings that I have missed. Due to this course being online I will have the benefit of not missing lecture material and all the notes that I have missed will be more easily available online than if it had been provided in lecture. I find the information covered in this class interesting and engaging therefore it won't be a chore for me to have to do the readings and I should be able to complete the missed work quickly, while still staying on track with my other work. As far as I am aware I have only missed one quiz and therefore the effect of missing a few weeks at this point is not substantial. If I feel I am falling behind in any of my courses due to adding this course I am prepared to attend sessions with a tutor in order to get back on track. Personally, I do not believe that adding this course will have a detrimental effect on my success in any of my courses.
